Party Sweet Shots

We had so much fun at the birthday party this weekend, and I had so much fun snapping away!

So, I have a question for all my followers and sweet shot visitors.  I know many of y'all are photographers, and I've been kinda thinking about taking pictures too.  I really enjoy taking pictures of children.  We had a photographer take pictures of Leah last January for her portfolio, and honestly I was not impressed by her shots.  I think she tried to make a 2 year old pose too often.  Shortly after my husband surprised me with my camera, and I have enjoyed taking pictures ever since. But, yeah, I'll try to make this short...what advice do you have for doing family and children photography on the side?

Now onto the fun stuff ... the sweet shots!

I am not a professional, I just like to take pictures. I think the best advice is to take pictures of other children (friends' kids, neices, cousins, etc) because if your kids are like mine, it is darn near impossible to get them to pose at all (even though I don't really like posed pics). Also, I take sometimes a hundred or more pics a day, just for practice. I am improving with each day and am excited to look back in a year or so on the pics that I took now that I think are great and see how much I've improved. :)

These were awesome! I just try and take pictures of my grands playing. They are the best.

They are getting tired of my camera now.

Really great photos. My advice is to take loads of pictures to build a portfolio so you can show it to potential clients to ensure that they like your style.

These are such fun shots. I'm no pro...but I recommend really doing your homework before stepping into business. Too many "pro's" get into the business before they've worked on their skills. Skill build, then portfolio build. Have you considered checking out The Bump's Photography Board? Great resource to improve your skills.

Great captures!
I don't really have much advise on doing photography on the side other than I think it has to be harder than it looks. I take a ton of photos yet still go see our photographer a couple times a year. She has a way with my kids and manages to capture their best - it is a MIRACLE!!!!
